Jacob

It’s been 3 weeks. Well technically a month since I left. Wow! Every week goes by so fast. The days seem very long because we have a busy schedule, but Saturday seems to come around so fast! It’s crazy. Overall I’m enjoying myself. I’m loving living with my team. We fit so well together and I can’t thank God enough for that. The ministries are good, I enjoy going to the orphanages. In the evenings we usually do village outreach, which is pretty much a church service. They sing there songs then on of us speak for 10 or so minutes and it’s translated. The meetings can get long and tiring because they dont start till 8ish or after and we dont know what the are saying, then after the service we often times eat supper with the pastor at like 9:30 or 10 (It’s weird eating that late every night). Some times I just have to laugh about it and try to imagine what they’re saying.

There was one evening meeting that we went to that was a baby’s first time eating. They have services to celebrate anything; birthdays, going away parties, naming a child, anything you can imagine having a party for, they have a church service to celebrate. And it’s not like everyone comes to the actual church building. This one particular meeting was right in the middle of the dirt road. It was in a village across the street, so it’s not like it was a main road, but people still had to walk around the big blue tarp that was laid down to sit on, the electric piano, and our chairs behind the table “pulpit” I’m just trying to give you a picture of how random some things are, but you probably still don’t understand to the fullest some of the crazy things we are doing. Anyways, back to the meeting, we were told earlier that day that we were going to be naming a baby boy at the service that night. ..Now you might be surprised to hear that, I was the first time we did it. But apparently it’s pretty normal here because this was our second time doing it in 3 weeks here. So as a team, we were thinking of names we could give this baby boy and Ali said, “We should do Jacob”, and at the same time that popped into my head. (If you don’t remember, Jacob was the name that came to my head when I was at training camp). So that’s
what we decided to name the baby. Usually when the church does this, they ask
Katie to come up to share the baby’s name, pray for the baby then feed it rice
for the first time. But this time she pit it on me to do it since the name
meant more to me than anyone else on the team. So I got to name a baby boy
Jacob
J How special is that? When I told the family the name, I also
gave the background of why we chose that name. At the time they just nodded and
smiled, but hopefully it will come to mean as much as it did to me. Then after
the family fed us, I got to hold baby Jacob for a little. He was so precious!

This is an
amazing little lady from the Victory house. Kids with mental and physical
disabilities live here. People just abandon their child if they find out
something is wrong with them. They think it’s a curse and so they just leave
the child somewhere to be found. But this one girl (we aren’t allowed to say
their real name on the internet for privacy reasons, and I forget her internet
name, sorry) has a bone problem in her left leg that cause her leg to be extra
short. They’ve done multiple surgeries already, but I feel like it just made
her leg look worse. But that’s all that is wrong with her. She is such an
intelligent, beautiful girl. I hate seeing her be stuck in a situation like
this when she could be learning so much in school and having a totally normal
life style. The Victory house is amazing, don’t get me wrong, but there are
many stories like this where the child is for the most part completely normal,
but they live with other children that will never act like they are more then 5
or 6 years old. It’s crazy! Theresa said that if she could get to America and be fostered
while she has an operation or, even better, be adopted, she would flourish so
much! Her leg is totally fixable, just not here. It’s so sad, but I love
playing with her.

Anyways, thank you all so much for your prayers 🙂 I haven’t gotten sick yet, thank God for that!

God bless and hopefully I’ll post next Sunday!

Saralyn 🙂
