“If I were a butterfly, I’d thank you Lord, for giving me wings. And if I were a robin in a tree, I’d thank you Lord that I could sing. And if I were a fish in the sea, I’d wiggle my tail and I’d giggle with glee. But I just thank you, Father, for making me, me. ‘Cause you gave me a heart and you gave me a smile, you gave me Jesus and you made me your child. So I just thank you, Father, for making me, me.”
I sing this song to most of the children at Sarah’s Covenant Home. I feel that they need to hear this, even if they don’t understand it. People all over the world look down on people with special needs, but it seems so obvious here in India. I think that it is so important that these precious children know that they are the children of God and are beautiful just the way they were made.
So many people wonder what’s “wrong” with a child, or how he/she can be “fixed.” I think it’s more important to love them, though. Spending time with these children is such a big deal in their lives. I think that Indian Christian Ministries understands that. They give them medicine, food, clean water, a good place to drink. They give them people who love them, and work so hard to bring mission teams here so that they can love them, too. I feel so honored to be a small part in this large organization. The people in charge of SCH have no formal training in working with these children, but they do such a good job. They love the kids so much, not because they want them to be “better,” but because they’re God’s children. They love them for who they are, not who they want them to be.
